Welcome to my E-Portfolio where you will find a reflection of my professional career as a Sonographer and my educational journey within the health care field. Explore the highlights of my 26 years of experience in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and discover how my expertise in ultrasound imaging has evolved over time!

My Educational Background

Since 1995, I have had the great pleasure of being part of the allied health care professionals after enrolling in the Radiology Technology Program at the Universidad Central del Caribe. I obtained my degree in 1997, which laid the foundation for my career in diagnostic medical imaging sciences. Eager to broaden my expertise, I pursued further education and earned my second degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography in 1998. These experiences have been instrumental in shaping my 26-year career in the field.

Diagnostic Medical Imaging Sciences License and Credentials

In 1997, I obtained my license as a Radiology Technologist in Puerto Rico, marking the beginning of my healthcare imaging journey. By 2001, I transitioned to being a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer with a specialization in Abdomen. Further enhancing my expertise, I achieved certification in Vascular Technology from ARDMS in 2004. Building on these accomplishments, I added another certification in Cardiac Adult Echocardiography in 2009. With a vast experience exceeding 26 years in the field of diagnostic medical sonography, my commitment to excellence extends across various domains of expertise.

My areas of expertise within the Sonography World

Throughout my extensive years of experience in Sonography across various subspecialties, in addition to adhering to the fundamental standards of practice, I have constantly strived to seek out and incorporate advancements in technology within each specific ultrasound field corresponding to my current credentials. This dedication to staying updated with the latest technological developments has been a cornerstone of my professional approach.

  • As a Non-Invasive Vascular Technologist and General Sonographer, I have gained extensive experience over the course of my career. I specialize in performing a wide range of exams including Abdominal, Renal, Hepatic-Splenic, Scrotal, Lower and Upper Extremities Arterial/Venous scans. Additionally, I have expertise in the assessment of pre and post-operative surveillance procedures such as bypass, stents, graft, Hemodialysis Access, and renal transplants utilizing color flow duplex imaging techniques, along with vascular physiologic testing. My skillset and knowledge enable me to provide comprehensive and accurate diagnostic services to all my patients.

  • As an experienced Adult Cardiac Sonographer, it has always been crucial for me to adhere to the established standards and guidelines when assessing structural heart conditions and advanced heart functions. In addition, staying updated with the latest advancements in echocardiography is essential for providing top-notch care. Integrating innovative techniques like Strain analysis, the use of Enhancing Agents such as contrast for better visualization, Heart Model applications, and Live 3D imaging into my practice has significantly enhanced the accuracy of my scanning over the years. This continuous learning has undoubtedly contributed to improved patient outcomes as I have honed my expertise in this field.

Practice Experience

I started my Diagnostic Imaging Technologist career as a night-shift Radiology Technologist in 1997, at a Public Regional Hospital in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. This role exposed me to the world of x-rays, where I dealt with trauma cases like motor vehicle accidents and gun shot wounds, along with other emergency scenarios requiring radiography examinations. Concurrently, I pursued my degree as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, completing it in 1998. As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, my first job was at Pavia Hospital in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Here, I conducted various ultrasound studies including Abdominal, Pelvic, Transvaginal, Obstetric, Breast, Scrotum, and Thyroid scans. My journey at Pavia Hospital also provided me with the valuable opportunity to delve into Vascular Ultrasound, a growing and fascinating field within sonography that I truly appreciate being introduced to.

In 1999, a new working and learning growing opportunity arrived with a diagnostic ultrasound mobile service company. This job experience helped in two different ways. First, I was able to travel, meet and appreciate more the beauty of my island of Puerto Rico and our people, while providing my ultrasound services in different facilities. Second, it served me as an introduction to the adult echocardiography sonography specialty.

In 2001, I successfully obtained my first certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in the Abdomen subspecialty. During the same year, I was fortunate to secure a position at Dr Jose A. Nassar and Associates Outpatient Radiology Center as a General and Vascular Sonographer. This invaluable job opportunity not only allowed me to enhance my expertise but also provided me with direct patient interaction, particularly in non-invasive peripheral arterial and venous testing. As a result of this experience, I was able to acquire my second registry in Vascular Technology from the ARDMS in 2004.

In 2004, I began a new chapter in my professional journey and personal development when I made the pivotal decision to move to Central Florida. I embraced the role of Vascular Technologist at Orlando Regional Medical Center, now recognized as Orlando Health, diving into intricate non-invasive vascular examinations. My responsibilities encompassed a range of specialized procedures like Transcranial Duplex, Hemodialysis Access Surveillance with Color Flow Duplex, and Bypass-Graft evaluations. Transitioning into the Central Florida healthcare community has brought me immense gratitude for the supportive environment among the Orlando Health allied health team. Alongside, I grasped new prospects such as performing Renal Ultrasounds and Duplex assessments for a network of Nephrologists. Furthermore, I embraced part-time positions as a Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer at reputable institutions including Health Central, Orlando Health, and Advent Health's Celebration Campus. These experiences have been instrumental in advancing my expertise in adult echocardiography and peripheral vascular techniques.

My Sonographer career journey with Orlando Health has been immensely gratifying since my very first day of work back in 2004. I have had the opportunity to perform ultrasound studies in various facilities and department subspecialties, which has significantly enriched my knowledge in the field. This experience has also broadened my perspective on the mission and vision of this not-for-profit healthcare organization, dedicated to enhancing the health of Central Florida residents and ensuring the institution's sustainability for the future. Through the support of Orlando Health, I have been able to continually advance in my profession, eventually securing a position as a Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer at the Orlando Heart and Vascular Institute, the outpatient division of Orlando Health. I take great pride in representing this institute and strive to enhance patient experiences and outcomes in the realm of cardiovascular diseases.

Educational Goals

I am currently in the final stages of completing my Bachelor’s Degree at Washburn University with a major in Health Services Administration and a minor in Medical Imaging Sciences. The program has provided me with valuable insights into developing detailed plans to enhance patient care quality, improve team satisfaction and performance, and ensure the financial stability of a Diagnostic Imaging Department with a focus on the Ultrasound Subspecialty. It has highlighted the importance of balancing leadership and team dynamics by incorporating inputs from management and frontline staff. Prioritizing the well-being of imaging technologists is essential for optimal patient outcomes and aligning with institutional goals. My academic journey has prepared me to design inclusive initiatives, such as creating a cost-effective program to prevent Musculoskeletal Injuries in Sonographers. Other vital courses covered financial aspects in healthcare, business model financial planning, ethics, scientific research, and pathophysiology concepts.
